Malaria is a serious tropical disease spread by mosquitoes. If it isn’t diagnosed and treated promptly, it can be fatal.

Symptoms of malaria
It’s important to be aware of the symptoms of malaria if you’re travelling to areas where there’s a high risk of the disease. Symptoms include:
a high temperature (fever) sweats and chills headaches vomiting muscle pains diarrhoea Symptoms usually appear between 7 and 18 days after becoming infected, but in some cases the symptoms may not appear for up to a year, or occasionally even longer.
When to seek medical attention
Seek medical help immediately if you develop symptoms of malaria during or after a visit to an area where the disease is found.

Preventing malaria
Many cases of malaria can be avoided. An easy way to remember is the ABCD approach to prevention:
Awareness of risk – find out whether you’re at risk of getting malaria before travelling Bite prevention – avoid mosquito bites by using insect repellent, covering your arms and legs, and using an insecticide-treated mosquito net Check whether you need to take malaria prevention tablets – if you do, make sure you take the right antimalarial tablets at the right dose, and finish the course Diagnosis – seek immediate medical advice if you develop malaria symptoms, as long as up to a year after you return from travelling
Side effects
Like all medicines, doxycycline can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.
Common side effects These common side effects happen in around 1 in 10 people. Keep taking the medicine, but talk to your doctor or pharmacist if these side effects bother you or don’t go away:
a headache feeling sick or vomiting being sensitive to sunlight Serious side effects Serious side effects are rare and happen in less than 1 in 1,000 people.
Call a doctor straight away if you get:
Bruising or bleeding you can’t explain (including nosebleeds), a sore throat, a high temperature (38C or above) and you feel tired or generally unwell – these can be signs of blood problems.
Severe diarrhoea (perhaps with stomach cramps) that contains blood or mucus, or lasts longer than 4 days ringing or buzzing in your ears
Serious skin reactions or rashes, including irregular, round red patches, peeling, blisters, skin ulcers, or swelling of the skin that looks like burns – these could be signs of a rare reaction to the medicine called Stevens-Johnson Syndrome
Yellow skin or the whites of your eyes go yellow – this could be a sign of liver problems joint or muscle pain that has started since you began taking doxycycline
Headache, vomiting and problems with your vision – these could be signs of pressure around your brain (intracranial hypertension)
A fingernail coming away from its base – this could be a reaction to sunlight called photo-onycholysis
A sore or swollen mouth, lips or tongue
Severe pain in your tummy, with or without bloody diarrhoea, feeling sick and being sick – these can be signs of pancreatitis difficulty or pain when you swallow, a sore throat, acid reflux, a smaller appetite or chest pain which gets worse when you eat – these could be signs of an inflamed food pipe (oesophagitis) or oesophageal ulcer
Serious allergic reactions
Allergic reactions to doxycycline are common and occur in more than 1 in 100 people.
These are not all the side effects of doxycycline.

I had severe malaria at the time but had really low white blood cells (WBC) and my platelets were all back to their pre-malar level.
Give as directed by your veterinarian. Follow the instructions printed on the prescription label. Store doxycycline at room temperature. Be sure to complete the prescription to ensure a full recovery, even if your pet seems to be improving, unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian. Allow your pet access to plenty of water. Doxycycline can be given with or without food but should not be given with dairy products.
Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use in animals with a known sensitivity to doxycycline. Do not use in pregnant animals. Do not administer any calcium-containing medications, antacids, laxatives, or multivitamins within 2 hours of the last doxycycline dose. Notify your veterinarian if your animal suffers from kidney or liver disease. Doxycycline may increase skins sensitivity to sunlight. Store at room temperature. Store protected from light and moisture.
Allergic reactions and serious side effects are rare, but in the case of an allergic reaction or a serious side effect you should stop doxycycline treatment and seek veterinary attention. Some common signs of allergic reactions and serious side effects are hives, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, loss of appetite, or dark colored urine.

Doxycycline should not be used in animals allergic to it or other tetracycline antibiotics. Use with caution in animals with impaired liver or kidney function. Do not use in pregnant, nursing, or growing animals since this medication may cause slowing of bone growth and discoloration of teeth. Give antacids, vitamin and mineral combinations, iron, or Pepto-Bismol at least 1 hour before or 4 hours after giving doxycycline. Use caution when given with digoxin or warfarin. Doxycycline is not affected by food.

Doxycycline Hyclate 100mg is a prescription drug that is used to treat bacterial infections in dogs and cats. Doxycycline belongs to a group of drugs called tetracyclines. It is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections in dogs and cats including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal tract infections, bone and joint infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and gastrointestinal infections. This medicine may be used for other infections as determined by your veterinarian.
This medicine is usually given twice daily, depending on your veterinarian. However, your veterinarian may occasionally give you a double dose to make up for the total amount given. Do not use more often or give a lower dose at all than is necessary. This medicine should be used with the extreme caution in giving it to you. It may cause some side effects. Talk to your veterinarian about whether you can give this medicine again.
